HOW TO WORK ON LETTING IT GO
As I sit at my desk this Wednesday afternoon and reflect on the events of this year, there is one word that sums up 2020 – uncertainty. There is uncertainty about the election, uncertainty about the Coronavirus, uncertainty about the economy, uncertainty about another stimulus package, uncertainty about how people will respond no matter the outcome of the elections, and so much more.
On top of this, you could be facing uncertainty on a more personal level. Uncertainty about your health to uncertainty about your job, you could be under attack from many directions at once. As a result, you could feel stressed or even a little out of control. Ok. Maybe a lot out of control. But for your sanity, you have to channel Elsa and “Let It Go.” But this is easier said than done.
Worrying vs. Letting It Go
Instead of letting it go, many of us turn to worrying about the situation. But worrying changes nothing. It only makes things worse. Worrying has so many negative effects on you mentally and physically. Worrying can cause you to have restless nights and headaches, brain fog, loss of appetite, and more.
Even the Bible tells you to hand it over to the Lord. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).
Yes. I believe giving it to the Lord is a must. But as the saying goes, faith without works is dead. So, in addition to praying and handing it to God, there are some actions you can take to help feel some sense of normalcy.
Tips on How to Work on Letting it Go
- Shift your focus to things you do have control over. You have control over how you react. Perhaps practicing mindfulness will help you focus on the positive vs. rehashing negative thoughts.
- Learn to manage your overall stress and anxiety. Try this simple breathing exercise that I do every morning since all of the protests occurred earlier this year. It is the 4-7-8 Breathing Technique. Close your eyes, place your hand on your chest. Inhale through your nose for four (4) counts, hold your breath for seven (7) counts, and then exhale for eight (8) counts and repeat. Also, try yoga or meditation or some exercise. (Check with your doctor before you start any exercise regimen.)
- Learn to accept uncertainty. By now, you know that life is anything but predictable. There is uncertainty around every turn. The quicker you embrace it, the quicker you can move forward.
